THE ERMEDÀS COMPLEX

THE ERMEDÀS COMPLEX

The main nucleus is made up of a group of several farmhouses, which are in close proximity to the Sant Ramon chapel. The homes are built along the road which leads to the church from Palafrugell and Santa Margarida to the north. At the most southerly end, we find the chapel of Sant Ramon and, just in front, Can Fina, with its 16th century watchtower. The farmhouses, that with their outbuildings and enclosure walls created the pathway, or section of road, form an inseparable unit.

Farmhouses have been documented here, in this municipality, from as far back as the 12th century.

On the Palafrugell and Mont-ras plains, many towers have been preserved. These towers were built for communication and to protect the families that lived there. The closest to Ermedàs are the Mas Petit d’en Caixa and the Mas Borrull towers. The towers were originally isolated and self-protected buildings, but from around the 18th century onwards, farmhouses were usually attached and the space put to agricultural use. The only isolated tower that remains is the Simona Tower, which is very close to the centre of Ermedàs.
