THE LLOFRIU COMPLEX

 

The old town centre in Llofriu sprung up around the Sant Fruitós church. It already existed in the 12th century, although the current building is from the 18th century. We can still see some ironwork nailed to the door, which is possibly from a Romanesque church.

The houses that have been preserved in the town centre are from the 17th, 18th and mainly 19th centuries, given the prosperity of agricultural and forestry businesses at that time.

One house that stands out is that belonging to Joan Bassa i Bosch and Irene Rocas i Romaguera. Built at the end of the 19th century, the family abandoned the house when they emigrated to Argentina to seek their fortune. In the attic, we can still see some goodbye graffiti.

It currently houses the Bassa-Rocas Cultural Centre, which was a public school and is now home to the Llofriu Neighbours Association and RETECORK (European Network of Cork Territories), as well as being one of the stops on a route encompassing the sites linked to Spanish emigrants from Palafrugell who became rich in Latin America.

Llofriu has a nucleus of homes located around the Girona highway, which is called “La Barceloneta”.

Another building that should be noted is Mas Pla, the stately, agricultural family home of Josep Pla, where he lived, wrote and died. He is buried in the Llofriu cemetery.
