PASSEIG DE TAMARIU

 

Tamariu is the last nucleus of the municipality of Palafrugell that had a stable population. Since Medieval times, people lived inland due to the danger of sea raids, and on the coast there were boat houses, or “stores”, where fishing tools were kept.

The first fishing families moved in there around the middle of the 19th century, after which salt mines and taverns were slowly built. Even so, the beaches of Aigua Dolça, Tamariu and Es Portió, which formed the bay, were places where the families of Palafrugell would go to spend the day. There, both on the beach and in the beach huts, the families would have lunches, go fishing or sing in groups with their families and friends.

Es Portió beach is also known as Liris beach, which is the name of the beach hut that was built in 1872 by a group of people in Palafrugell, mainly from the cork industry, as a place to socialise and enjoy their free time.
