PLAÇA NOVA (NEW SQUARE)

PLAÇA NOVA (NEW SQUARE)

Built in 1758, on what was, at the time, a communal threshing floor. It is an example of how Palafrugell has grown beyond the limits of the Medieval area. In the northern section of the square, one of the entrance arches of the old wall has been preserved. Here stood the Moragues tower, which was taken down in 1908 to facilitate the circulation of vehicles.

The Plaça Nova is the social centre of Palafrugell and is presided over by two buildings which represent the importance of the town’s community spirit over the years.

THE FRATERNAL CENTRE

It is the only social club that remains active out of the many that existed at the end of the 19th century. Founded in 1887, it was a social club for working men, most of whom worked in the cork industry. Besides the café, the club still conserves its theatre, the rooms used by the club’s members and a magnificent library.

THE MERCHANT CERCLE

Created in 1904 by those residents of Palafrugell who represented the industrial bourgeoisie, traders and big landowners, the new society moved in to the building, which was built at the end of the 1870s. In the 1920s, it was remodelled to make it look like the grand, Bourgeois social clubs of the time. The theatre which was part of the society, is currently the Municipal Theatre of Palafrugell, after the Town Hall renovated the buildings in 2009.
