THE ABATTOIR

 

The location of Palafrugell’s municipal abattoir is linked to the urban and demographic growth of the town throughout the 19th century. Previously, it had been located within the town’s walls. Later, it moved to a building close to the small train station and, finally, in 1907, new facilities on the outskirts of the town were designed for it by the architect, Isidro Bosch i Bataller (1875-1960). These new facilities opened their doors in 1911.

 

The building is in an Eclectic style, with Modernist features, maximising expressiveness using only the construction materials. The design plays with the colour contrast between the brick and cut stones that frame the segmental arched windows. The façade’s whitewashed walls stand out, as does the ornamental strength of the friezes, the cornices, the arches and other features, such as the stone shield of Palafrugell.

 

The abattoir ceased its activity in 2018.
