PASSEIG DEL CANADELL

PASSEIG DEL CANADELL

The name Canadell comes from the word canya, or reed, a plant that is very abundant at the points where the rivers empty out into the sea.

During the 19th century, there were several cellars on the beach and, above the bank, stately homes which had been built for Palafrugell’s petite bourgeoisie. However, there was no road that facilitated access between the two ends of the bay.

This problem was solved at the end of the 19th century, when the cellars that didn’t reach the bank were raised and a bridge was built over the river. This pathway, designed and later remodelled by Joan Pericot i Garcia (1907-1987), is what today is known as the Passeig del Canadell.

The beach and the cellars, some of which were detached, while others were connected to the villas up on the road, where were families in Palafrugell went to spend their leisure time. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Canadell was were women were allowed to bathe, while the men had to go to Port Bo and Port Pelegrí.
