The circle of traders from the town launched the first Catalan ships to the American colonies in 1765. In the 19th century, the presence of immigrants from Palafrugell in America increased (we might especially mention the philanthropist Josep Torres Jonama) and Cuba and Argentina were the main destinations; during the Cuban War of 1898, several residents were embarked to an undesired war.
The Bassa Rocas are the family from the Empordà with strong religious convictions and Catalanist roots who in distant America found the instruments to become defenders of the Catalan culture and language to the media and different Catalan entities in Argentina. The Bassa Rocas house in Llofriu, is the starting point of the route of the americanos, which goes through the town and on to Llofriu, Calella and Llafranc, which stage the memory of the americanos who made their fortunes in Cuba, Argentina, Guatemala, Chile and the United States, especially in New York.
