SANT PERE DE CALELLA CHURCH

SANT PERE DE CALELLA CHURCH

Construction of the church began in 1854, the year in which Mossèn Collboni, the rector of Palafrugell, sent a report to the Diocese of Girona, in which he laid out the benefits of creating a new parish in Calella.

The first stone was placed in 1885 and the roof put on in 1886. One year later, the vault, the presbytery and the bell tower were built. On 19th of October, 1887, the bishop blessed the first bell, which was named Teresa de Jesús, and the priest, the church.

Due to problems of financing, the building work could not be finished, despite the fact that it was already being used for worship. The solution came thanks to the philanthropist, Dorotea de Chopitea (1816-1891), a Chilean woman and widow of José María Serra (son of the Palafrugell native, Mariano Serra i Soler). In 1889, the church was restored and a rectory built.

Between the years 1858 and 1968, the building was fully restored and the square tiled under the direction of Joan Pericot i Garcia (1907-1987), giving it its current appearance and crowning the bell tower. The painter Raimon Roca Ricart (1917-2013) was responsible for decorating the inside with scenes from the life of Saint Peter.
