PALAFRUGELL MARKET

PALAFRUGELL MARKET

During the 19th century, the market was held outside, on Cavallers road. In 1895, it was thought necessary to change its location and so a covered building was built on a plot of empty land next to the church. It was designed by the architect Martí Sureda i Vila (1866-1947) and opened its doors in 1901.

At first, the covered market was home to stalls selling all kinds of produce, but given the building’s capacity, it ended up being used solely for the sale of meat and poultry, as is still the case today.

The new market was one of the first covered markets in the province of Girona. It stood out for its functionality. Given that hygiene was a priority, it was made sure that the inside space was well-lit and well-ventilated, thanks to large openings, a dual-covered roof system and waste-water drainage.

In the 1970s, the fish market was built on the plot of land left behind after the demolition of the old town hall. The current building is the fruit of a reconstruction that was inaugurated in 1987.
